About this work

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres painted this portrait of Napoleon in 1806, two years after he crowned himself Emperor of the French. Napoleon sits facing us on a round-backed throne in his coronation costume: a golden laurel wreath like Julius Caesar's, an ermine collar under the great collar of the Légion d'honneur, and a purple velvet cloak lined with ermine and embroidered with gold bees. He holds the sceptre of Charlemagne in his right hand and the hand of justice in his left, and an imperial eagle spreads across the carpet beneath his feet. The rigid frontal pose recalls Phidias's colossal statue of Zeus at Olympia, and the art historian Robert Rosenblum saw its model in God the Father from Jan van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece, then in the Louvre. In the carpet's border Ingres slipped in a small version of Raphael's Madonna della seggiola, a tribute to the painter he most admired. The portrait was shown at the Salon of 1806, owned by the Corps législatif. It passed to the Louvre in 1815 and has been in Paris's Musée de l'Armée, at Les Invalides, since 1832.
