Landscapes

A valley that looks like a promise. Far farms. The kind of weather that makes people stay.

About this work

Frederic Edwin Church painted New England Scenery in 1851, early in his career, when he was still painting the Hudson River School subjects of New York and New England he had learned from his teacher, Thomas Cole. It is not one real place but an idealised panorama that gathers the essence of pastoral New England: a covered bridge, a waterfall and a mill, a lake, farmland and a rounded mountain under a sky of summer clouds. A Conestoga wagon crossing the bridge in the foreground stands for westward expansion and a growing country flourishing in harmony with nature. Like Cole and the other Hudson River School painters, Church believed that the vastness and beauty of the American landscape carried moral significance. By 1850 he had settled in New York and was exhibiting at the American Art-Union. Later in the decade he would turn to the far larger and more dramatic scenes of Niagara and South America that made his name. The painting, 36 × 53 inches, is in the George Walter Vincent Smith Collection of the Springfield Museums in Massachusetts.

Is it legal to print New England Scenery?

Yes. New England Scenery is in the public domain: its copyright, if it ever had one, expired long ago. In the United States a faithful photograph of a public-domain painting does not create a new copyright (Bridgeman v. Corel, 1999), so the image can be printed and sold freely.
