About this work

Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds is one of John Constable's most celebrated works. He first sketched the cathedral in 1811, chose a viewpoint from the bishop's garden to the south-east, and returned in 1820 to make drawings and an open-air oil sketch. The prime version, commissioned by his close friend John Fisher, the Bishop of Salisbury, was shown at the Royal Academy in 1823 and is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The spire rises through an arch of trees above the meadow, cattle stand in the stream, and at lower left Dr. Fisher and his wife walk in the grounds. After the exhibition Constable wrote that it was "the most difficult subject in Landscape I ever had upon my Easel". His patron objected to the dark cloud over the cathedral and asked for "a more serene sky". This is the full-scale later version in the Frick Collection in New York, painted after Fisher asked Constable to repaint the sky: where the London canvas is overcast, the Frick picture shows the cathedral under clear, bright weather. Fisher died before Constable finished it.

Yes. Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Garden is in the public domain: its copyright, if it ever had one, expired long ago.
