Saturn from Cassini
NASA / JPL / SSI, 2004
The rings are a bright knife, and we flew a ship into the neighborhood of that knife. Pale clouds. A storm wearing jewelry. The road Cassini is on ends in the clouds.
About this work
While cruising around Saturn in early October 2004, NASA's Cassini spacecraft took the images for what NASA called the largest, most detailed natural-colour view of Saturn and its rings made up to then. The mosaic is built from 126 images, taken over two hours on October 6, 2004, when Cassini was about 6.3 million km (3.9 million mi) from the planet: red, green and blue frames at each of 42 positions, tiled from one end of the rings to the other. The full mosaic is 8,888 pixels wide, and the smallest features in it are 38 km across. Visible are subtle colour bands in the rings, the thread-like F ring, ring shadows on the blue northern hemisphere, the planet's shadow falling across the rings, and blue-grey storms in the south. The moons Mimas and Janus appear faintly at lower left. Cassini, a joint mission of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency, entered orbit around Saturn on July 1, 2004. It stayed thirteen years, and on September 15, 2017 it was steered into Saturn's atmosphere and burned up, so that it could not contaminate the planet's moons.

FAQ
Where can I buy a framed print of Saturn from Cassini?
Here. Saturn from Cassini is available as a framed print in three sizes: Small (20 × 10 in) for $100, Medium (24 × 12 in) for $150 and Large (36 × 18 in) for $300. Prices include the frame and US shipping; delivery takes 14–21 days, with 30-day returns.
What size works best for Saturn from Cassini?
The file is 8,888 × 4,544 px, so every size is sharp: even Large (36 × 18 in) prints at 247 ppi. Choose Large (36 × 18 in) for a large wall; Small (20 × 10 in) suits a narrower space.
Is it legal to print Saturn from Cassini?
Yes. The image comes from NASA's Cassini mission and was released by NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Space Science Institute. NASA material is not protected by copyright in the United States unless noted, so it can be printed and sold. A print does not imply NASA endorsement, and NASA's logos and insignia are not covered.
