Jupiter from Voyager 1

NASA / JPL, 1979

A storm you could drop the Earth into. We sent a small ship past it once. No land. Weather older than our species. The ship is already leaving.

About this work

This is a detail of Jupiter's clouds photographed by NASA's Voyager 1 in 1979. The Great Red Spot, a giant storm that has been recorded since 1831, is the brown oval at upper right, with the wavy white and brown cloud bands of its wake trailing to the left. Voyager 1 was launched on September 5, 1977, sixteen days after its twin, Voyager 2. It began photographing Jupiter in January 1979 and made its closest approach on March 5, about 349,000 km (217,000 mi) from the planet's centre. On the way in, at a distance of 9.2 million km, it sent back the first detailed image of the Great Red Spot, showing cloud details as small as 160 km across. The flyby's biggest surprise was active volcanoes on the moon Io, the first seen anywhere beyond the Earth. Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System, a gas giant eleven times the diameter of Earth that turns once in about ten hours. Voyager 1 went on past Saturn and is now the most distant human-made object.
