Bootprint in the lunar soil

NASA / Buzz Aldrin, 1969

One bootprint. Fine dust, a clear tread, a shadow inside the mark. The man has already walked on. The ground has agreed to remember him.

About this work

NASA frame AS11-40-5878 is a close-up of an astronaut's bootprint in the lunar soil, photographed with a 70 mm lunar surface camera during the Apollo 11 moonwalk on July 20, 1969. The ridged tread of the boot is pressed sharply into the fine grey soil. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had landed in the lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility that afternoon, while Michael Collins stayed in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia. Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon about six hours after landing, and Aldrin followed nineteen minutes later. Together they spent around two and a half hours on the surface, planting an American flag, speaking with President Richard Nixon, deploying scientific instruments and collecting 21.5 kg (47.5 lb) of lunar material. After more than 21 hours on the Moon they rejoined Collins, and the crew splashed down in the Pacific on July 24. The mission was the culmination of the Space Race and fulfilled the national goal of landing people on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth.
