Aldrin at the Lunar Module

NASA / Neil Armstrong, 1969

Aldrin has walked far enough from the ladder that the ladder is a decision. Eagle's legs look too thin for the fall they just took. The black behind him does not blink.

About this work

Neil Armstrong took this photograph of Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969, during the Apollo 11 moonwalk, with a 70 mm lunar surface camera. Aldrin stands on the surface of the Sea of Tranquility near a leg of the lunar module Eagle, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia. Armstrong appears only as a reflection in Aldrin's gold visor, along with the lander and the equipment they had set up. Armstrong held the camera slightly rotated, cutting off the top of Aldrin's backpack; when NASA released the picture it was often rotated and given extra black sky above his head, but frame AS11-40-5903 is the original exposure. Armstrong had become the first person to walk on the Moon about six hours after the landing, with Aldrin following nineteen minutes later. Together they spent around two and a half hours outside, planting a flag, deploying instruments and collecting 21.5 kg of lunar material, before rejoining Collins and returning to Earth on July 24.
