Waterfall paintings, framed

Albert Bierstadt painted Yosemite's Bridal Veil and Nevada Falls in the early 1870s, Glen Ellis Falls in New Hampshire in 1869 and the falls of the Yellowstone in 1881. Thomas Hill followed with Vernal Falls (1889) and Bridal Veil Falls (1895).

In the East, John Frederick Kensett painted Niagara about 1851 and Bash-Bish Falls in 1855, Frederic Church the Lower Falls of the Genesee at Rochester in 1856, and James McDougal Hart and Hermann Herzog painted mountain cascades. In Switzerland, François Diday painted the Giessbach Falls on Lake Brienz and Alexandre Calame the falls at Handeck below the Grimsel pass.

Hokusai's Pilgrims at Kirifuri Waterfall (about 1832) comes from his series on the famous waterfalls of Japan. Most of these are upright pictures that suit a narrow wall. Each is printed at its true shape, nothing cropped or stretched, and arrives framed and ready to hang.

15 works in this collection, dated 1832 to 1915. Most represented: Albert Bierstadt (4), François Diday (2), and John Frederick Kensett (2). Sources include White House Historical Association (White House Collection), Amsterdam Museum, and Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
