About this work

Edward H. White II became the first American to walk in space on June 3, 1965, during the third orbit of Gemini 4, and his crewmate James McDivitt took this photograph from the spacecraft. White's face is hidden by a gold-tinted visor that protected him from unfiltered sunlight. In his right hand is the Hand-Held Self-Maneuvering Unit, a small gas gun he used to move himself around. He was attached to the capsule by a 25-foot umbilical and a 23-foot tether, wrapped together in gold tape into a single cord, and he wore an emergency oxygen pack on his chest. NASA's caption puts his time outside at 21 minutes. Gemini 4 was the second crewed flight of Project Gemini; McDivitt and White orbited the Earth 66 times in four days, the first American flight to approach the five-day Soviet Vostok 5 mission. White, a West Point graduate, Air Force test pilot and aeronautical engineer, died in the Apollo 1 fire on January 27, 1967. NASA catalogues this frame as S65-34635.
