Crescent Earth Over Lunar Horizon

NASA / Artemis II crew, 2026

Space · Artemis

They went where Earth drops out of the sky, and then Earth crawled back as a blue crescent over a gray dead edge. A sliver. The sliver is the only address that still has weather on it.

About this work

On April 6, 2026, the crew of Artemis II photographed this faint crescent Earth above the horizon of the Moon's far side. Artemis II, flown from April 1 to April 11, 2026, was a crewed flyby of the Moon and the first crewed flight of NASA's Artemis program, of the Space Launch System rocket and of the Orion spacecraft, which the crew named Integrity. It was the first crewed flight beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. The crew were Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and the Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Orion flew a free-return path that looped around the far side of the Moon, passing about 4,067 miles (6,545 km) above its surface. Behind the Moon the spacecraft lost contact with Earth for a planned 40 minutes. On the same day the crew set a new record for the greatest distance humans have travelled from Earth, 252,756 miles (406,771 km), beating the record Apollo 13 had held since 1970. NASA catalogues this frame as art002e015231.
