Plate 211 of John James Audubon's The Birds of America, engraved by Robert Havell in London. The heron is shown at life size, its neck bent down so the whole bird fits on the double elephant folio sheet. Audubon painted his birds from fresh specimens posed in lifelike positions. This copy belongs to the University of Pittsburgh.
