Landscapes

A crack of light between a cliff and a garden. Palms and a river on one side. A dead tree and a storm already started on the other.

About this work

Thomas Cole painted Expulsion from the Garden of Eden in 1828. Pictures of the subject usually make Adam and Eve the focus, but Cole, founder of the Hudson River School, tells the story through landscape, and the two figures are tiny. The composition is divided exactly in half. On the right is Paradise, full of light, lush plants and wildlife under a blue sky; Adam and Eve are thrust out of it through a gateway in the rock by a bright ray of light that probably stands for God. They cover their faces, with Eve leading the way. On the left the world outside is dark and threatening: dead trees, a volcano in the distance, and a wolf devouring a deer while a vulture circles. Cole signed it "T Cole" on the lower left of the cliff. Later in 1828 it was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, of which Cole was a founding member, together with its companion, The Garden of Eden, now in the Amon Carter Museum. In 1829 it was bought by Dr David Hosack, the physician who attended Alexander Hamilton after his fatal duel. It is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Yes. Expulsion from the Garden of Eden is in the public domain: its copyright, if it ever had one, expired long ago. In the United States a faithful photograph of a public-domain painting does not create a new copyright (Bridgeman v. Corel, 1999), so the image can be printed and sold freely.
