Landscapes

Thomas Cole painted this scene from James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Last of the Mohicans in 1827, signing it “T Cole 1827” at lower center. Cora kneels before the aged chief Tamenund, with the figures set small within a vast mountain landscape. It is in the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, the bequest of Alfred Smith.
